Do men secretly want sons not daughters?
Men want sons, not daughters, claims a leading academic.
Dr Glenn Wilson, a professor in gender and sexual psychology, says men actively seek the pride and importance of having the family name passed through the generations.
He says: "This was true in the days of Henry VIII. Traditionally your line is carried on through your name. Also sons and fathers share more genetic material than dads and daughters because the X chromosome is passed on as a unit which could be a basis for an instinctive preference Read more [...]
How Dr Seuss Screwed up My Life
By Cynical Dad
?As darkness approaches and it's time to sleep,
My small mind starts to race with thoughts that are deep.
"Why are we all here and from where did we come?
Why are some so happy while some are so glum?"
And onward I wrestle these thoughts in my head
Instead of sleeping soundly, snug in my bed.
My thoughts turn to me; I become quite critical.
"How did I end up so jaded and cynical?"
Was it my parents, my friends, or my teachers?
My colleagues, my foes, my lovers, my preachers?

Cancer-stricken actor Michael Douglas has admitted that he regrets sacrificing fatherhood for his film career. The Oscar-winning star told the New York Daily News that he has regrets about being a bad dad to his drug-dealing son Cameron, confessing that he repeated the sins of his legendary dad Kirk Douglas, 93.
Douglas, 65, pointed out parallels between him and his father, saying that he, too, had sacrificed fatherhood for his film career. "My career was really just getting started and that Read more [...]
“Motherhood” hormones turn new dads into girls
New dads experience a surge in parenting hormones very similar to that experienced by women, new research has found.
The surge in oxytocin and prolactin are well documented in pregnant women, but its now been discovered that men also experience a surge in these same hormones.
"This seems to be evolution's way of helping men turn into good parents as soon as they have a baby." says Professor Ruth-Feldman a neuroscientist at Yale University, who conducted the study.
Feldman believes the hormones Read more [...]

Why siblings are important for children
Its good for your children to have siblings and even better if they have sisters according to a new study by psychologists.
The study showed that young adolescents who had sisters either younger or older were less likely to experience negative feelings such as loneliness guilt and fear.
Having a loving sibling of either gender encourages a sense of generosity such as helping a neighbor or watching out for other kids at school, and reduces the chance of depression but it was particularly true Read more [...]
Being a Dad by Liam Gallagher
Parenting, Rock Star Style
"I am a top dad, without a doubt, I've seen other dads at school and they haven't got a fooking clue, they talk to their kids like idiots. I'm cool man. And fun and all. I'm not strict, but I'm not a pushover either.
I would never hit them - I'm not into violence. And let me say this, when I take my kids to school. I'm probably the only fooking dad who is there every day. A lot of dads turn up on the first day to show off in a fast car and younever see them Read more [...]
Babies more likely to breastfeed when dads take paternity leave
Babies are more likely to breastfeed when their dads take more paternity leave says a new study.
The European research shows that an enabling of an increased involvement from fathers during the infants’ first year of life, such as by paid paternity leave, may have beneficial effects on breastfeeding up to 6 months of age
It discovered that babies whose fathers did not take paternity leave during the infant’s first year were significantly less likely to be breastfed at 2 and 6 months

Parenting style can influence teenage drinking
You may not be able to stop your teenage children but your parenting style might well influence how much they drink.

We need bad teachers
A leading education expert has argued that schools need bad teachers to help children.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, in Britain, the chair of Ofsted, the UK’s schools governing body, says ”If every primary school has one pretty naff teacher, this helps kids realise that even if you know the quality of authority is not good, you have to learn how to play it” the schools inspector said.
